LAD Cab

The cab is a "long door" type from around 1963  It came to me mostly bare from central NSW, Australia - the Australian ones are generally in far better condition (rust wise) than most in NZ because of the climate.  Often a bit beaten-up, though, and this one is no exception.

Still - great to get one of these very rare cabs in restorable condition.

I picked it up from Customs agents Tapper's Transport in Onehunga.  The partially crated cab was a tight fit between the guards on my (borrowed) vehicle trailer.

Well wrapped up and *hopefully* well fumigated - don't want any of those nasty Aussie bitey/stingy things coming at me.

Next trick was getting it off the trailer - another tight fit between the hoist posts.

The crate was mostly particle board with a melamine lining.  It was already starting to disintegrate, so I figured the best plan was to dismantle the crate and run a couple of load binders under the base.

Now I need to fabricate a cradle/trolley so the cab can be moved around.  See this page for details of the cradle.

Time to strip the cab and assess it.

The window rubbers were perished and very hard - had to cut them out completely to remove all the glass.

The smaller glass apertures were fine, but there is significant rust &
scale along the bottom edge of
the windscreen.

Much of the cab is double-skinned.  This makes it quite tricky to get to the back of the panels in some sections, although there are plenty of access panels provided.

Check the Cab Stripdown page for the complete strip-out.

  1. That looks a pretty rust free LAD cab for its age. Look forward to pictures of it being restored.
